Sucralose

Sucralose is another term for the sweetener Splenda, which has taken some serious flak recently. This sweetener has come under fire for being "dangerous" because it was recently found in an Italian animal study that sucralose was linked to a higher risk of developing leukemia. Any artificial sweeteners are potentially dangerous and should be avoided; however, they are unfortunately found in many bottled juices that attempted to lower their calorie count but needed to remain sweet.

Reb A

According to Pure Via, which produces Stevia products, "Rebaudioside A, or Reb A as it is commonly known, is the sweetest of all the natural compounds in the stevia leaf." Reb A can be found in most Trop50 products by Tropicana, as well as SoBe Lifewater. The product is 200 times sweeter than sugar, but NBC news reported that "The FDA rejected stevia petitions in the 1990s after research linked the plant with infertility in rats and cancer in the lab. The agency says the currently marketed reformulation, Reb A, is 'generally recognized as safe.'" While the sugar substitute that comes from a plant might seem like a great alternative to sugar, it, like all sugars and sugar substitutes, is indeed something to be wary of when consumed in large amounts.

High-Fructose Corn Syrup

High-fructose corn syrup can be found in many bottled juices, including Tropicana Twister, Sunny D, and some original flavors of Capri Sun. This is another sweetener that has come under scrutiny in the past few years as America has tried to clean up its high-sugar diet. The Mayo Clinic reported, "As use of high-fructose corn syrup has increased, so have levels of obesity and related health problems, leading some to wonder if there's a connection."

Niacinamide

Niacinamide is a great source of vitamin B3 and is found in many orange juice products like Tropicana and Naked. Niacinamide can help to treat high cholesterol and has even been reported to help improve joint flexibility, which can assist in arthritis rehabilitation. Just be wary of consuming too much of this ingredient, because it can cause some harmful side effects.

Pyridoxine Hydrochloride

This hydrochloride salt of pyridoxine is reported to be "an essential cofactor in many enzymatic reactions in amino acid metabolism, including transamination, deamination, and decarboxylation." It can be found in Naked juices that are high in natural vegetable and fruit products.

Citric Acid

Science Daily reports that "Citric acid is a weak organic acid found in citrus fruits. It is a natural preservative and is also used to add an acidic (sour) taste to foods and soft drinks." The ingredient is found in many drinks, including many juices that require a tartness or a citrusy flavor. While there aren’t any real health risks associated with citric acid, mass consumption of any kind of acidic ingredients can lead to ulcers, heartburn, and indigestion.

Yellow 5 and Yellow 6

These are both food coloring additives that can be found in many drinks that do not use natural juices. You can find these additives in products like Sunny D, Tropicana Twister, and Capri Sun. Men’s Health reported, "Studies have linked both dyes to learning and concentration disorders in children, and there are piles of animal studies demonstrating potential risks such as kidney and intestinal tumors."

Beta Carotene

According to the Mayo Clinic, this is considered a provitamin because it can be converted to active vitamin A. The provitamin beta carotene can be found in many drinks that feature carrot as an ingredient. Drinks like Naked Juice, Odwalla, and even some Tropicana have beta carotene in them that allows for a more orange color of the juice, but the ingredient can also lead to some pretty good health benefits for consumers!

Canola Oil

This is another ingredient that can be found in Sunny D. Canola oil comes from the seeds of the canola plant and is typically used in cooking. The ingredient is technically a fatty acid but when consumed in mass quantities it can cause health risks such as weight gain and heightened blood pressure and cholesterol.
